Note
Richard Bell Sparkes started work at the age of 10 in the coal mines. Later in his life he worked as a machinist (working on a lathe) at Palmer's Shipyard, Jarrow, England. He retired at the age of 72 after an accident, he fell and caught his hand in the lathe, and he had to go to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (about 5 miles) every week for treatment. His granddaughter Adelaide Hazlewood recalls him telling her that he taught himself to read and write, there was no compulsory schooling in those days. Palmer's was the only shipyard in Britain to make the ships complete from the iron ore to the fitting out of the finished ships. They owned coal mines in Durham and smelted their own iron producing Jarrow's famous landmark the "slag heap". His daughter Janet Elizabeth Sparkes recalled that during WWI, they had just dumped a load of slag which lit up the whole town with a red glow when a German Zeppelin came over and dropped bombs on Palmer's.
Note
Richard Bell Sparkes was a cousin to J Alexander Bell, who in turn is the Grandfather of Susan Bell Enns.
